Hope for Honduras Spring Gala 2010
Time and Date: 6:00-9:00pm, Sunday, April 25, 2010
Location: Young Ballroom, Reid Campus Center, Whitman College
This year marks the second annual Hope for Honduras Gala, benefiting the Engineers Without Borders elementary school project in Luis Garcia, Honduras. Last year, Walla Walla alumni, students, and community members competed and dashed for desserts, bid on silent auction items from Honduras and the local valley, and participated in a live auction. Items included weekend vacation packages, artwork, Amazon Kindles, and iPod Touches.
The Hope for Honduras project aims to rebuild and restructure the elementary school in Luis Garcia, a community which was recently destroyed by a hurricane. An eight-person team limit ensures that the community is highly involved in the process and learns sustainable skills for future improvement in their town. At present, the school and its grounds suffer from a poor sewer system that floods the playground, from classrooms overcrowded to the point of turning many students away, and from having no place to prepare the dried food donated for the children. WWU engineers designed improved buildings and systems for the school which they plan to build in three phases, the first phase happening this March. Building plans were temporarily delayed due to travel bans in Honduras over the past few months, but the restrictions have been lifted and our engineers are eager to continue the task at hand.
The Hope for Honduras Gala is a marvelous event to wrap up Alumni Weekend this coming April. Please register early for early-bird discounts. We look forward to spending a delightful evening with you!
